Tanzania targets 3 million tonnes of poultry feed consumption by 2036

The country’s ten-year poultry development strategy aims to increase egg and poultry meat production.

TANZANIA – Tanzania plans to increase annual poultry feed consumption to approximately three million tonnes by 2036 under its National Poultry Development Strategy (NPDS) 2026-2036, as the government seeks to expand poultry production and strengthen the domestic compound feed industry.

The ten-year strategy requires an estimated TSh3.53 trillion (approximately US$1.4 billion) in investment, with funding expected from government, private-sector investors and international development partners.

Under the plan, annual egg production is targeted to increase from 7.1 billion to 17.3 billion eggs, while poultry meat output is expected to rise from 156,000 tonnes to 380,000 tonnes by 2036.

Production of high-quality day-old chicks is also projected to increase from 104 million to 250 million annually. The poultry industry’s contribution to gross domestic product is expected to grow from 1.8% to 3%.

Feed industry investment takes priority

The expansion will require increased compound feed production and reliable raw material supplies to support growing demand from poultry producers.

Deputy Minister for Livestock and Fisheries Ngwasi Kamani said the private sector is expected to contribute approximately 60% of the required investment, while international development partners will provide 25% and the government the remaining 15%.

Funding will support poultry farm modernisation, feed manufacturing, technology adoption and productivity improvements.

Poultry Association of Tanzania Secretary-General Sufian Kyarua identified high feed costs, shortages of quality feed and limited access to financing as continuing constraints on industry growth.

He highlighted investment in affordable compound feed production and reliable raw material supply chains as important to achieving the strategy’s targets.

Tanzania is also seeking international cooperation to strengthen its poultry value chain.

At the Tanzania-Netherlands Poultry Business Forum in Dar es Salaam, representatives from both countries discussed opportunities in feed production, equipment supply, poultry housing, research and innovation.

The strategy is expected to benefit more than four million households involved in poultry farming by supporting food production, employment, and agricultural development.
