Kachin State advances feed factory and chick hatchery projects

The developments form part of wider investment in feed manufacturing, poultry production and aquaculture, including planned soybean processing facilities and fish farming expansion.

SOUTHEAST ASIA – Kachin State is advancing construction of an animal feed pellet factory with a production capacity of five tonnes per hour and a commercial chick hatchery expected to produce more than 200,000 chicks monthly, as the region steps up investment in livestock and aquaculture.

Chief Minister U Khet Htein Nan inspected the facilities in Shwepyitha Ward, Myitkyina, on 31 October, reviewing construction progress and coordinating with officials to ensure a steady supply of building materials and keep the projects on schedule.

The facilities are being developed by KT Company on a 2.5-acre site. The feed factory is expected to produce livestock and aquaculture feed, while the hatchery will initially produce nearly 80,000 chicks monthly before expanding to more than 200,000 after establishing a dedicated breeder farm.

The investment comes alongside other developments to strengthen Kachin State’s agricultural and livestock value chains.

Other developments in the region

In September, officials and private-sector representatives discussed plans to establish soybean oil mills in Myitkyina and Mohnyin.

The proposed facilities will use solvent extraction to produce cooking oil and animal feed, creating more opportunities for local soybean processing and feed-ingredient supply.

Kachin State currently cultivates six major oilseed crops across approximately 104,004 acres, including 25,208 acres of soybeans.

Officials estimated that local production could supply around 300,000 baskets of soybeans for milling, potentially supporting farmers and domestic processing industries.

Aquaculture is another area receiving investment. In October, the state chief minister inspected a commercial fish farm in Putao supported by K60 million from the State Economic Promotion Fund.

The project operates nine ponds across more than three acres, raising over 2,000 fish, with plans to expand pond capacity and encourage further private-sector participation.

The latest feed factory and hatchery developments are expected to complement these investments by improving access to locally produced feed and poultry chicks.

Together, the projects reflect efforts to strengthen local agricultural processing, livestock production and fish farming while reducing reliance on supplies transported from other regions.
