The paper-fibre packaging combines thermal insulation and cushioning, offering pet brands an alternative to conventional materials.

UNITED KINGDOM – Hydropac has introduced EcoCool®, a paper-fibre insulated box liner designed to protect temperature-sensitive pet products during shipping while reducing reliance on conventional packaging materials.
The liner combines thermal protection and cushioning in one product, helping maintain temperature stability and protect contents from transit damage. It is designed for use in 10-, 12- and 14-inch cubed box systems.
EcoCool is made from clean, unused cardboard offcuts and is curbside recyclable, with its recyclability independently verified. Its manufacturing process uses no glue or water, relying on a 100% dry process and renewable electricity.
The product is positioned as an alternative to insulation materials such as polystyrene, loose paper fill, cotton, jute and wool.
“Sustainable insulation is only sustainable if it works,” said Colin Rowland, managing director at Hydropac. He said packaging teams should assess the performance of the complete shipping system, including the box, liner and coolant, under actual distribution conditions.
Hydropac is offering customers support in selecting the appropriate liner, coolant and box configuration for their products and shipping requirements. The company recommends testing the complete packaging system before switching materials.
Rowland said EcoCool combines two functions traditionally handled by separate materials: cushioning and insulation. He encouraged pet brands to evaluate the liner alongside their existing packaging and coolant arrangements.
The liner is compatible with Hydropac’s range of coolants, including HydroPure water ice packs. Brands using other coolant products can consult the company on how EcoCool could fit into their existing cold-chain packaging systems.
Packaging performance matters for maintaining product condition throughout distribution, especially for pet food and other temperature-sensitive pet products. EcoCool aims to meet this need while offering a recyclable, paper-based option.
