Egypt exports 60% protein corn gluten meal to African markets

This first export introduces another potential plant-protein source for African feed manufacturers.

EGYPT – National Corn Products Company (NCMP), part of Cairo 3A Group, has exported 60% protein corn gluten meal to African markets for the first time, opening a new route for Egyptian feed ingredients into the region.

The shipment expands the company’s animal nutrition export portfolio and could give feed manufacturers another source of concentrated plant protein for poultry and livestock diets.

Corn gluten meal is a protein-rich co-product of wet milling, the process that separates starch from maize.

It consists mainly of the gluten fraction recovered during processing and is dried for use in animal feed.

Unlike corn gluten feed, which has a substantially lower protein concentration, corn gluten meal typically contains around 60% protein or more.

The ingredient supplies protein, energy and amino acids, including methionine, which is important in poultry nutrition. Its yellow pigments, known as xanthophylls, can also contribute to the colour of egg yolks and poultry skin.

However, corn gluten meal is relatively low in lysine and tryptophan, so nutritionists must balance it with other ingredients to meet animals’ amino acid requirements. Its inclusion depends on the species, production stage and overall feed formulation.

What the export means for African feed manufacturers

For African feed mills, access to additional protein ingredients can help broaden formulation options and diversify sourcing.

Corn gluten meal may be used alongside other plant and animal protein sources, depending on local availability, nutritional requirements and cost.

Whether Egyptian supplies offer a price or logistics advantage will depend on the destination market and the terms of future shipments.

NCMP’s published product specification sets a minimum crude protein content of 60%, maximum moisture of 12%, maximum fat of 5%, ash of 2.5%, cellulose of 3%, and starch of 7%.

The company lists the product in 50 kg bags.

The company has not publicly identified the destination countries, shipment volume or export value. The scale of the initial trade and its potential contribution to regional feed ingredient supply therefore remain unclear.

For Cairo 3A Group, the shipment forms part of its strategy to expand international markets for Egyptian feed ingredients.

Its longer-term significance will depend on whether NCMP can secure repeat orders and build lasting commercial relationships with feed manufacturers across Africa.
