ADM’s new salmonid nursery feed delivered 17% higher average body weight than a competing starter feed in a rainbow trout trial, alongside improved size uniformity.

FRANCE – ADM has launched NURSal, a specialised nursery feed designed to improve early growth, feed efficiency and size uniformity in salmonids.
In a 90-day feeding trial involving triploid rainbow trout, the company reported higher average body weights and more uniform growth than with two commercially available starter feeds.
The feed targets the hatchery and nursery stages, when young fish undergo rapid digestive and immune system development.
Its formulation combines marine proteins and fats with essential fatty acids, including omega-3 highly unsaturated fatty acids (HUFA), docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA). It contains 52–55% protein.
NURSal uses cold micro-extrusion technology, followed by marmorisation and precision sieving.
ADM says processing below 70°C helps preserve heat-sensitive nutrients, while the spherical pellets are designed to improve water stability and reduce nutrient loss.
Consistent particle size supports uniform feed intake among young fish.
Trials report faster growth and improved uniformity
After 84 days, rainbow trout fed NURSal reached an average body weight of 25.0 grams, compared with 21.4 grams and 18.7 grams for fish receiving the two competing diets.
These results were 17% and 33% higher, respectively.
NURSal-fed fish reached the 25-gram target about seven days earlier and had a feed conversion ratio (FCR) of 0.66.
Size uniformity was also higher, with a coefficient of variation of 17%, compared with 23% and 25% for the competing diets. ADM reported statistically significant differences.
More uniform growth can simplify fish grading and reduce size-related competition.
ADM estimates that reaching the target weight seven days earlier could save about 31 days per year in intensive aquaculture systems, including recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS).
The trial also assessed gut microbiome characteristics using flow cytometry analysis of samples from 20 fish per dietary treatment.
ADM reported higher Overall Health Score and alpha diversity values, along with reduced bacterial populations, in the NURSal group.
The company said these findings indicated differences in gut microbial community characteristics.
The formulation incorporates ADM’s LifeDefense® functional feed concept, which aims to support animal health and performance by maintaining a favourable intestinal environment.
It includes two proprietary feed additives and a dedicated premix.
NURSal combines specialised feed manufacturing with targeted nutrition to support early salmonid development, with potential benefits for growth performance, feed utilisation and production efficiency.
